IST to SAW Airport Transfer for Connecting Flights
Landing at Istanbul Airport and flying next from Sabiha Gökçen? Plan the whole connection: leaving the first terminal, travelling across the city and completing departure procedures at the second airport.
Can you connect between IST and SAW?
Yes, but IST and SAW are separate airports requiring a landside journey. You must leave the arrival airport, travel to the departure airport and complete the next flight’s procedures. For an international arrival, check your eligibility to enter Türkiye. Allow for baggage collection, road traffic and the onward airline’s deadlines; a private transfer cannot guarantee a flight connection.
Before buying tickets, check both airport codes. A connection that stays at IST avoids the airport change and may be a better choice when the alternative leaves little time.
How much time should you leave between flights?
Calculate the interval from your scheduled arrival at IST to your scheduled departure from SAW. Build it from four parts: arrival formalities, the ground journey, the onward airline’s recommended airport arrival allowance, and a separate disruption buffer.
For an international self-transfer, around 7–8 hours is a cautious starting point to assess, based on the illustrative calculation below. This is our planning guidance, not an airline minimum connection time or a guarantee. A longer interval or overnight stay may be appropriate when replacement flights are expensive or infrequent.

The 90-minute and 120-minute figures are assumptions, not measured averages or maximums. Any stage can take longer, and a one-hour buffer cannot absorb every disruption. The arrival allowance also does not change your transfer operator’s included waiting period.
Example: landing at 10:00, departing at 17:30
With 90 minutes to reach the vehicle and two hours on the road, you would reach SAW at 13:30. That leaves four hours before departure: three for airport procedures and one additional hour of flexibility. A 90-minute inbound delay would use all that flexibility and another 30 minutes.
Always use Istanbul local dates and times. A departure just after midnight belongs to the next calendar day.
Check-in closure is not your target arrival time
Pegasus General Rules, section 6.6, recommend arriving at least three hours before international departures and two hours before domestic departures. Airport check-in closes 60 minutes before international flights and 45 minutes before domestic flights; the listed boarding-gate deadline is 20 minutes before departure.
Those cutoffs require you to have completed the relevant procedure. Reaching the terminal at the cutoff is too late to start queuing. Check your own operating airline’s rules and any flight-specific instructions, especially if you are flying with AJet or another carrier.
What happens to checked baggage and entry formalities?
Confirm how your bags will travel
Plan to collect your checked bags at IST, take them in the vehicle and check them in again at SAW unless your airline explicitly confirms a different arrangement for the airport change. Ask the first check-in desk which airport is shown on the baggage tag.
A through-ticket or a boarding pass for the onward flight is not, by itself, confirmation of baggage transport between airports. Turkish Airlines’ transfer guidance distinguishes between different ticket and baggage arrangements; instructions for staying inside IST should not be applied to an IST–SAW road transfer.
Check permission to enter Türkiye
An international passenger changing airports must go landside. Check the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ entry and visa information for your nationality and travel document before booking. Remaining in an international transit area is a different situation. If your eligibility is unclear, confirm it with the airline and the relevant Turkish consulate.
Choosing transport between the airports
A pre-booked private vehicle gives you an agreed pickup arrangement and a direct journey with your group and luggage. It still uses public roads and is affected by traffic, weather and airport access conditions. Ask for a route estimate for your date and pickup time, then allow additional flexibility.
Havaist also provides an inter-airport shuttle option. Check the exact direction, departure time, boarding point and current fare on the official Havaist website. Include the wait for the bus in your calculation. Public transport savings are useful only if the complete journey fits the flight schedule.
For a private IST-to-SAW quote, specify both airports. An advertised airport-to-city price should not be assumed to cover an airport-to-airport journey. Confirm the vehicle, luggage capacity, total price and applicable tolls in writing.
How to arrange your connecting-flight pickup
- Send both flights. Include flight numbers, dates, scheduled arrival at IST and scheduled departure from SAW.
- Describe your group. Provide passenger names, the total count, suitcases and any child-seat or mobility requirements.
- State that this is a flight connection. The onward departure deadline matters when assessing the pickup.
- Review the confirmation. Check the route, price and meeting instructions; save them offline before departure.
- Update the team after landing. Say if baggage or entry checks are taking longer, and follow the confirmed meeting instructions.

What if the first flight is delayed?
Recalculate the remaining time using the updated arrival, expected airport exit, current road conditions and onward check-in deadline. Contact the airline or ticket seller about alternatives if the connection is no longer realistic; tell the transfer team before changing your destination or flight.
For separate tickets, do not assume the second airline will rebook you free of charge. Ask what protection, if any, applies to your booking. Choosing an earlier arrival or a later departure before travel can cost less than replacing a missed flight.

IST to SAW connection questions
Is a three-hour connection between IST and SAW enough?
We would not recommend booking it as a planned airport change. Three hours must cover leaving IST, the journey and departure procedures at SAW. For an onward international Pegasus flight, that is already its recommended airport-arrival allowance before adding the first airport or the road journey.
Is six hours guaranteed to be enough?
No. It may work under favourable conditions, but your baggage, entry checks, traffic and airline deadlines determine the margin. Assess the full itinerary; our illustrative international planning budget above is seven and a half hours.
Can I stay airside while changing from IST to SAW?
No. This journey leaves the airport and travels on public roads. If you arrive internationally, you must meet Türkiye’s applicable entry requirements.
Does the same planning apply from SAW to IST?
Yes: airport exit, ground travel, departure procedures and a buffer still apply. Obtain a fresh estimate for the reverse direction and follow the airline departing from IST. Do not reuse the outbound drive estimate without checking.
